Abstract: The author considers the two views on the female education in the 19th century Russia. The opponents of the female education adhered to the traditional patriarchal views on the woman’s place in the society. The supporters believed that the female education in Russia was a long-felt need, and that men and women should have equal rights. They also declared that women should actively participate in the social, political and economic life of the country.
