Abstract: The article deals with the modern system of religious education in the Russian Orthodox Church and the place occupied by the subject ―Church Slavonic Language‖ in the row of doctrinal disciplines. The article specifies the role of reading aloud as a kind of receptive speech, comprehension as a type of speech and religious activity, and the inadequate attention paid to the development of productive modes of speech activity caused by the pragmatic goals of religious education in the system of Sunday schools.
