Training of Teachers in Sverdlovsk in the Late 1930s and Early 1940s

Abstract: The paper analyzes the training of general school teachers in Sverdlovsk in the conditions of introduction of compulsory primary education and transition to compulsory seven-year schooling. The authors study the role of short term pedagogical courses, regional teachers’ conferences, Sverdlovsk pedagogical colleges, Sverdlovsk State Pedagogical Institute (now USPU) and teacher training institutes in the process of general educational and professional upgrading of teachers. They also take into account the participation of the communist party organizations in this process and the repressive policy of the Soviet state in dealing with the public education workers in Sverdlovsk.
