Depersonalization as a Protective-Adaptive Mechanism of Psyche Aimed at Preserving the Integrity of Ego-Identity

Abstract: The importance of the phenomenon of depersonalization discussed in the article is called forth by significant changes taking place in our society in recent years that make all the more important research issues of personal identity, its degree of formation, and, most significantly, regulation to the most adaptive state. The problem on which this article focuses involves the consideration of the positive (adaptive) protective function of depersonalization. Depersonalization, in its turn, is seen as a violation of personal identity in the form of deviation in the direction of its partial or complete loss (depersonalization of personality). The main place in the article is taken by the analysis of the data relating to the definition of the level of adaptation, as well as the relationship between the degree of depersonalization and the protective mechanisms of the psyche. The purpose of the empirical study is to test the hypothesis that there is a relationship between the phenomenon of depersonalization and the types of psychological protection which has adaptive character in stressful situations and is necessary to maintain the integrity of identity. The results indicate a positive manifestation of the function of depersonalization, and thus expand the use of psychological means of work with clients showing depersonalization symptoms seeking help from a psychologist or psychiatrist.
