Abstract: The transformations taking place in society inevitably affect modern Russian family – its role structure changes, both partners get equal rights and duties, because of which the leadership of a man acquires a formal character, the authority of the father is replaced by that of the mother. In this regard, the study of the phenomenon of family self-consciousness of men becomes urgent, which allows identifying the features of the man's awareness of himself as a family member and subject of family relations. The aim of the study is the theoretical basis and empirical verification of the typology of family self-consciousness of men. Fundamental to this research is the idea of subject-activity (A.V. Brushlinsky, S.L. Rubinstein) and student centered (K.A. Abulkhanova-Slavskaya, A.G. Asmolov, A.A. Bodalev, A.V. Petrovsky, K. Rogers, A. Maslow) approaches; conceptual views on identity as central component of an individual (B.S. Bratus, I.S. Kon, A.N. Leontiev, V.S. Mukhina, V.V. Stolin, E.V. Shorokhova); key provisions in the field of family studies and family relations (J.E. Aleshina, A.Ya. Varga, N.N. Vasyagina, O.A. Karabanova, V. Satir, V.A. Sysenko, L.B. Schneider, E.G. Eidemiller). The study has found that family self-consciousness of a man, as a subjective psychological reality, is a projection of his self-consciousness in the family sphere, allowing realizing themselves as a family member and the subject of family relations. The structure of a men's family self-consciousness is represented by a set of cognitive, emotional and behavioral components, each of which includes functional-role characteristics of marital, child-parent and kinship relationships. The structural and content analysis of the combination of elements of family self-consciousness allowed us to empirically verify the typology of family self-consciousness of men and describe the types of men ("head of the family", "uncertain", "dependent"), reflecting the features of perception and awareness of the man himself in the family, the specifics of the relationship to himself as a family member, especially the implementation of family roles, functions and interaction with family members. The research materials can be used in individual and family counseling to harmonize family relations.
Key words: Family consciousness; family consciousness of men; components of family consciousness of men; types of men.
