Agreement of Verbal Forms in the French Language in Teaching Future Pedagogues and Translators

Abstract: This article is a review on the textbook «Grammar of the French Language: agreement of verbal forms» by M. V. Plotnikova, Associate Professor of Romance Languages Department of the Ural State Pedagogical University. Mastering this grammatical topic is difficult and requires careful and detailed consideration. The importance of preventing common errors in the agreement of verbal forms in spoken and written language of teachers, interpreters and all those wishing to pass an international exam in French and learn French at an advanced level. The need for independent students' learning activities for the successful agreement of verbal forms is underlined. A critical analysis of theoretical views and training exercises offered in the reviewed textbook is proposed. M. V. Plotnikova describes the agreement of verbal forms (verbal tenses of the indicative mode, past participle) with subject and direct object. The link between the lexical and grammatical values for correct agreement is presented. Special attention is given to the agreement of four types of pronominal verbs, infinitive constructions, to the use of auxiliary verbs. The development of synthetic and analytical thinking in studying grammatical phenomena as an important component of methodical development of future teachers is stressed. The advantages of this textbook are: brevity, clarity, completeness and modern language material. Among the disadvantages we find: a series of exercises is not well developed. Recommendations for subsequent editions of the review textbook: to use electronic educational resources, to develop a series of tests with keys for self-assessment, etc. The reviewed textbook is recommended for the French language learning for students of the Ural State Pedagogical University and other universities and language schools.
