Foreign Languages in the System of Education of Eighteenth-Century Russia

Abstract: In the XVIIIth century in Russia an attempt was made to establish a state system of public education. At that time new types of fashionable schools appeared with different contents of education and trends, and traditional educational institutions were reformed. Besides, knowledge of the foreign languages was considered to be one of the most important elements of general education, and it was an integral characteristic of an educated person.
