Abstract: Particular examples in the article show the possibility of the use of knowledge about the patterns of the dialects functioning in order to explain phonotactyc variation and irregularity in the literary Italian language: some peculiarities of the literary language derive from the phonotactyc of the Tuscan dialect, others are linked with the features of northern and southern dialects.
