Abstract: In the article, higher education is seen as one of the factors that contribute to the economic security of the state. The system of higher education composed with educational institutions, implementing educational programs of training of specialists for various sectors of economy. The problems of their economic activities are studied in comparison with the socio-economic conditions of society and the possibilities to increase the level of economic security. The article focuses on the issue of shadow economic phenomena of the higher education system of Russia in general and educational organizations of higher education in particular. Economic security of higher education and shadow phenomena in the educational organizations are explored in the context of modern concepts of domestic and foreign researchers. The undertaken analysis testifies to the ambiguity of views of scholars on the nature of economic security, models of its structure and evaluation criteria. The article presents a model of economic security of an educational organization of higher education, which contains criteria and evaluation parameters of external and internal threats in the field of educational, scientific innovational and economic-financial activity of the University. The structure of the model includes the following elements: economic independence, stability and resilience and ability of self-development and progress. The content of structural elements of the model is defined and described on the basis of existing legislation, with an accent on possible risks of shadow economic phenomena springing up in educational organizations of higher education.
