Formation of Information Skills in the Process of Teaching Mathematics

Abstract: In this article the features of formation of information skills of primary school age children during the process of teaching Mathematics are described. The purpose of the article is to analyze and display the exercises for formation of information skills for children of primary school age. As research methods the authors use analysis of psychological-pedagogical, scientific-methodical and educational literature. The authors note that the concept of "information skills" should be considered in conjunction with such concepts as “information culture”, “information competence” and “information literacy”. Information skills are defined as the ways of information processing with the help of the acquired knowledge. The structure of information skills is described. The authors identify such skills as information search and information analysis in this structure. The exercises in Mathematics are selected in order to develop the necessary skills. The analysis of textbooks in Mathematics for primary school showed that they practically do not contain tasks to convert information from one form to another, as well as control and evaluation activities and tasks to express their opinion and attitude. In this regard, the authors offered the exercises in Mathematics for each skills development. The practical significance lies in the fact that the research material can be used in the teachers’ practice in primary school.
