Abstract: One of the principles of the state policy in the field of education is the principle of the humanistic nature of education, the priority of universal human values of life and human health. The regulatory and legal documents of the Russian Federation indicate the need to implement healthpreserving conditions that should apply to all educational organizations. Such conditions include: availability in the educational organization of a professionally trained teaching staff, availability of a certain infrastructure of the educational organization, implementation of a healthy and safe lifestyle program, and a corrective work program. The importance of taking into account the above conditions is particularly relevant for students with mental retardation. On the one hand, on the basis of the law "On Education in the Russian Federation", students with mental retardation can receive education both in educational organizations in conjunction with other students, and in individual organizations that carry out educational activities (educational organizations that implement adapted basic general education programs). On the other hand, when solving the problem of preserving and strengthening the health of students, educational organizations, as a rule, use a minimum package of health saving activities. In turn, this leads to the fact that the characteristics of psychophysical development of students with mental retardation exacerbate the manifestation of their special educational needs. Based on the analysis of federal regulatory and legal documents and methodological materials, the article describes the requirements for conditions conducive to the implementation of the health preservation problem for students with mental retardation. These materials will be useful for teachers and specialists of both educational organizations and individual educational organizations that implement adapted basic general education programs.
