Development of a Program of Optimization of Safe Defensive and Coping Students’ Behavior in the Educational Environment

Abstract: The article discusses the problem of safety of defensive and coping behavior, which ensures the psychological security of the educational environment and its subjects. The question of the lack of practical tools for the formation and optimization of safe defensive and coping behavior is raised. The aim of the study is to develop and approbate a program of socio-psychological training to optimize the defensive and coping behavior of students in the educational environment. Taking into account the results previous studies (n = 338), which identified four safe / unsafe types of behavior: altruistic, victimized, neurotic, and adaptive, the model of safe and unsafe defensive and coping students’ behavior in the educational environment was built; a program of socio-psychological training was developed. The training program is implemented in several stages: the preparatory stage – primary diagnostics of defensive and coping behavior; the basic stage – implementation of training; the final stage – summative diagnostics; post-training support in the form of individual counseling. After the training, the program is evaluated in accordance with the identified performance criteria. The training program was tested in a group of first-year master’s degree students at the Institute of Psychology of the USPU (n = 10, Ekaterinburg). The developed program showed its effectiveness: the participants began to feel more secure in the educational environment and enriched the repertoire of their strategies for coping with difficult situations; the group grew more cohesive, and its psychological climate improved. The training program can be used to increase the psychological safety of students and teachers, to create a safe educational environment in secondary and higher vocational schools, to increase the cohesion of newly enrolled groups of students, as an element of adaptation measures for first-year students.
