Abstract: The article examines the nature and basic definition of "patriotism" and the content of this concept and the attitude to it in different periods of Russia's development. Based on the analysis of existing ideological pluralism in the country, the author comes to the conclusion that at the present time, in connection with the collapse of the Communist ideology, it is the idea of patriotism that can be a dominant idea in Russia. In the modern world not only the Communist idea, but all the existing ideologies are in crisis. Confrontation of ideologies often grows into confrontation of civilizations. The confrontation between Russia and the West has always represented the clash of civilizations. With the collapse of communism it has not stopped, but has just taken new forms. Consequently, in contemporary Russia the idea of patriotism can consolidate the society. The article analyzes the main objectives, directions and forms of Patriotic education. The main conclusion is that various forms and methods of Patriotic education are necessary, they should be intensified, but the main condition and, at the same time, the successful outcome of Patriotic education is the real improvement in most social and economic indicators (level of living of the population, its mortality rate, birth rate, crime, culture, health care, education, consumption of drugs, tobacco and alcohol, etc.).
