Abstract: The article discusses the problems of teaching mathematics in a higher educational institution for students of humanitarian specialties in the conditions of new educational standards and reduction of hours allocated for the discipline study. The results of introduction of the educational and methodical complex in Nizhny Novgorod Linguistics University based on the combination of class work with students and distance learning methods based on the modern e-Learning system are presented. The purpose of the study is an empirical confirmation of the hypothesis of improving the quality of material mastering by students in the systematic use of innovative forms of instruction based on the application of distance learning technologies and on an individual approach to each student. In particular, an example of the creation of an educational and methodological complex is considered, taking into account different levels of mathematical skills of first-year students in order to equalize it and achieve the required learning outcomes. The article describes the structure of the complex course developed by the authors, combining multilevel training modules, evaluation-control and interactive elements; it describes the principles of work with the course and the results of the three-year experience of teaching. The indicators of student’s achievement andthe development of their independent cognitive activity are analyzed. Attention is focused on changing attitudes to the exact sciences created over the years at school and the students’ psychological barriers overcome. The study of the results of the experiment was carried out according to the results of examination sessions, testing of students' residual knowledge and input and resultant questionnaires. The analysis of the results allows us to speak about obvious positive changes in all the indicators under consideration: a significant improvement in student's progress in mathematics, overcoming difficulties in teaching, and raising the level of independent cognitive activity. Summing up, we may say it is important and necessary to use new teaching methods in organizing the educational process in higher education institutions, expanding the classical concept of the information and learning environment with the help of modern distance technologies based on e-Learning platforms.
