Abstract: The article deals with the problem of the necessity of formation of professional competences in Russian as a foreign language among cadets of military engineering school. Theoretical and scientific-methodological works are discussed, in which attention is focused on professionally-oriented training. However, it is emphasized that all the studies share one aspect: the issue of teaching professional communication is considered from extralinguistic perspective, which is certainly important when teaching military students. The relevance of this issue, therefore, is the lack of adequate teaching guides for military educational establishemnts that would meet the requirements of the military engineering profile and contribute to the formation of not only linguistic and cultural competences, but professional linguistic and communicative competences. The main features of teaching students of military engineering specialties the Russian language are noted, the nature of the difficulties which teachers and students face in the course of educational activities is determined. These provisions are illustrated by an example of teaching materials with comments for teachers. They highlight the principles of selection of educational materials in a professionally-oriented teaching of Russian as a foreign language; the specifics of the teaching materials, requirements and requests of the university and social order; the objectives and ways of implementation at each stage of language teaching of military students of the engineering specialty in the course of studying the Russian language.
