Factors of Higher Education Content Renewal

Abstract: The article deals with an important component of higher education learning process – the content of education. Planning of higher education content is becoming different and acquires a new significance as it is not specified by normative documents. In such conditions university teachers become responsible for the selection of teaching materials – education content. To be able to perform this task they need to have certain points of reference, guidelines. The article presents the points of reference that were discovered earlier but are still authoritative and of interest nowadays. They include: conceptual understanding of education content, the kind of professional activity that a graduate will be involved in, employers’ requirements, professional standard and others. Besides that, the article addresses the new guidelines, which radically change the process of selection and formation of education content in higher education institutions. They include such points of reference as: globalization, information and Internet-based technologies, Russia’s integration into the Bologna process, competence-based approach to higher education learning process. The author of the article underlines that the necessary consideration of all guidelines as well as of the results of teaching and educational practice analysis can help find a solution to the problem of proper higher education content selection.
