Abstract: The article looks at the issue of teaching to interpret а literary text in a foreign language at а linguistic faculty of а university. The paper presents the methodological subject matter of interpretation as a special type of verbal and mental activity. Interpretation of a literary fiction text in a foreign language is considered in the context of the dialogue of cultures, and is based on the theory of intertextuality. On the basis of analysis of material in the theory and practice of text interpretation, different types (levels) of interpretation are defined by the depth of the meaning and content penetration of the text: unprofessional interpretation is based on the immediate impression; formal interpretation – analysis of a literary text in a specific pattern; professional interpretation – proficiency in a variety of research strategies and approaches to the analysis and interpretation; mental interpretation, and teatation. Teatation is understood as the process of creating one’s own textual-mental picture of the world. These types correspond to the level of development of students' skills in text interpretation in a foreign language. The criteria for selection of these levels are 1) the level of interpretation – the depth of the meaning and content penetration of the text; 2) the quality and validity of interpretation. In conclusion, the author describes the difficulties faced by students when working with foreign language texts for interpretation.
