Optimization of Practice in Translation for Students of Linguistics

Abstract: The article provides a description of the author’s practical experience in the organization of translation practice of students of Linguistics. It discusses different types of translation practice: training practice and pre-graduation practice, identifying their place in the general structure of the educational program, their main goals and objectives. The author outlines positive and negative sides of assigning students to various institutions, including translation agencies, translation departments, and other organizations where translator’s services are required. To optimize the process of training, a set of tasks has been worked out which develop professional qualities in the field of intercultural communication, translation, and research work. The structure of the tasks and their order reflect the competences essential for future graduates following the requirements of the Federal State Education Standard of Higher Education in the field of Linguistics. The tasks are of four types: 1) pre-translation analysis of the text; 2) texts for translation and further analysis of translation techniques; 3) translated texts for evaluation and correction; 4) tasks for interpretation. Pregraduation translation practice is carried out in the educational establishment. It gives students the opportunity to study the mechanism of scientific research and its practical application. The article also identifies the role of practice supervisor and enumerates the components of the organizational and educational support.
