Retroactive Infinitive Constructions in Modern English Prose

Abstract: The article is devoted to the analysis of the retroactive infinitive construction in Modern English. The object of research includes sentences of the following type He is to blame. The main peculiarity of such sentences is the form of the verb that has a passive meaning though it is active in its form, and the subject of the sentence experiences the action. The main aim of the article is to study the retroactive infinitive constructions in detail. The research is essential from the theoretical point of view since common and specific features of the retroactive infinitive constructions have been found out, and the analysis of this grammatical phenomenon in literary style have been performed. The results can be applied in the courses of practical and theoretical grammar and in the course of translation. The author comes to the conclusion that the retroactive infinitive constructions occupy a significant place in the traditional system of the category of voice in English Grammar. Since this grammatical phenomenon has not been fully studied yet, it should be analyzed in other functional styles as well.
