Abstract: The article is devoted to the study of evaluation of phraseological units containing a numeral in the Russian and English languages. Evaluation, which is connected with other components of the phraseological unit, is its important component because it conveys the speaker’s value-oriented and emotive attitude to figurative reality. The evaluative component has an objective-subjective status. On the one hand, evaluation reflects the system of values that exists in the society; on the other hand, it depends on the person’s opinion. The phraseological units under study have been classified into several thematic (semantic) groups on the basis of the object of evaluation. In each group, the most representative phraseological units in language and speech have been identified. The data of the national corpora served as a material for the evaluation investigation. A comparative analysis enabled the author to define some common and distinctive features of evaluation of phraseological units with cardinal and ordinal numerals. Statistical calculations show which evaluation type (positive, neutral, negative), explicated by the phraseological units, predominate in Russian and English. The article also describes values typical for the Russian and English-speaking cultures.
Key words: Phraseological units; numeral; evaluation; object of evaluation; value; discursive study; corpus.
