Nonverbal Communication: Codes, Channels and Spatial Organization

Abstract: This is a review of T.A. Gridina, N. I. Konovalova, N. A. Vorobyova practical workbook "Nonverbal communication" in which the concept of nonverbal communication is considered and fundamental theoretical components of this concept are described. In the practical workbook the characteristics of nonverbal and verbal communication allowing to concretize distinctive features of the nonverbal message are given; information types, which can be conveyed by nonverbal messages, and functions of the messages in the interaction with verbal components are noted. The main channels of nonverbal communication, which, to some extent, accompany verbal components and thus focus attention on this or that moment of the communicative act are structured; attention is also paid to spatial organization of nonverbal communication. The considerable part of the practical workbook is devoted to the methods of analysis of nonverbal messages. The detailed algorithm is offered, by means of which students will be able to trace channels, levels, functions of a nonverbal signal. The role of the nonverbal message in an advertizing discourse is examined, attention is paid to the types of the nonverbal signal; examples of advertizing texts with different types of sign language are presented; and the matrix for the characteristic of a nonverbal code is offered. The illustrative material makes it possible to disclose the notion of nonverbal communication and to practice the received competences in the methods of analysis of the nonverbal message in the exercises presented in the practical workbook.
