Abstract: The article studies women‘s education in England on the border of XVIII-XIX centuries as depicted in Jane Austen‘s early realistic novels. The author highlights the main educational texts for young noblewomen, which had considerable influence upon the educational sphere of the epoch. The author discloses the then reasons for different approaches to the education of boys and girls. The article analyzes the educational demands of the gentry of the period to their daughters‘ and sons‘ education according to their future role in society. The author defines the basic educational practices implemented in home schooling and in other alternative forms of education for girls, for example in boarding schools. The author shows what ideas of Jane Austen‘s contemporaries about women‘s education and the role of woman in education as a teacher or governess were reflected in her novels. Particular attention is given to the novel "Emma", which can be defined as an "educational novel". This novel is a complex of stories about how women educate women. The author also considers Jane Austen‘s own educational experience in her childhood.
