Abstract: The article describes an approach to training decorative arts and crafts specialists based on the development of artistic imagination as an important component of the category of project image and mastery of professional craft. In the structure of project activity, the author singles out a technological shape of a thing and a project image. The article presents the results of an analysis of the role of the artistic image in the process of designing an object, and traces similarities and differences in the project image in design and in decorative art. The article also substantiates the fact that both creative imagination development techniques aimed at creating a special artistic image and variation of modern and traditional technologies used to implement the project function as effective means of intensification of project activity. The author stresses equal importance of both components, paying attention to the essential role of the technological component when designing objects by future arts and crafts specialists.
