Abstract: The article presents the analysis of the existing definitions of the term “individual educational trajectory” in relation to a university student. These days a number of social factors stimulate the reformation of higher education process in Russia and call for the study of the meaning of the term mentioned above. One of these factors is the requirement of the Federal Law “On education in the Russian Federation” that higher education institutions realize the principle of individualization. That is why search for possible conditions for the realization of students’ individual educational trajectories in the learning process of Russian higher education institutions is becoming an important concern for them. During the process of choosing, forming and realizing individual educational trajectories students can acquire the particular personal qualities that are needed in the present-day society. Alongside with the analysis of various approaches to the definition of the main term “individual educational trajectory”, the article also presents the analysis of the definitions of other terms which are close in meaning to the one mentioned above. The author of the article singles out their common and distinctive features. Taking the results of this analysis into consideration, the author formulates her own working definitions of the following terms: “individual educational program”, “individual educational path” and “individual educational trajectory”. The author of the article presents her view on how these three terms can be logically and semantically interrelated. Student’s individual educational program is described as the first and most general level of education planning. It becomes more specific when a student formulates his individual educational path, which is then transformed into an individual educational trajectory.
