Abstract: The article deals with peculiarities of scientific and naïve categorization of intellect in Russian lingual mentality. Proceeding from the principle of versatility of worldviews and recognition of urgency of the category INTELLECT for the philosophical, psychological, physiological and naïve worldviews, the author describes typical for each sphere essential properties of categorization, analyzes the content of the category, actualized concepts, semantic relations of the category under study with other categories of human mind: thinking, memory, imagination, logic, spirituality, morality, etc. Philosophers single out such properties of intellect as self-reflection, ability of constructive doubt and critical attitude, ability to involve dialectical contradictions into one’s thinking and ability of abstract thinking (of thinking in categories). Materialistic, idealistic, realistic, metaphysical and dialectical types of intellect are usually distinguished. Psychologists try to solve various problems – to define the structure of intellect, and to figure out its quantitative parameters (IQ). The latter is associated with the speed of mental processes. Naïve worldview should necessarily be based on intellectual properties of man (erudition, education, creativity, experience and sociability), capacity to think (ability to take analytical actions, to make non-standard decisions, etc.) and social relevance of mental activity. The main methods of study of interpretations of intellect by speakers of Russian are the method of direct association experiment and the statistical method. In conclusion, the author summarizes the typical features of the Russian category INTELLECT (its abstract character, complex conceptual-semantic organization and specific nature for each particular worldview: universal, supra-individual character in the philosophical worldview and individual nature in psychological and physiological worldviews). The results of the study could be used in pedagogical practice.
