Abstract: The paper proposes a solution to the problem of training schoolchildren of educational institutions of secondary school age to innovative activity by incorporating elements of independent patent search into their creative design activity. The authors present a method based on the use of the International Patent Classification in preparation of pupils’ creative projects as a means of teaching information search. The distinctive features of the method are its systematic character, age-orientation, and the relationship with the main stages of project activity of pupils. Application of this method promotes the inventive level of projects of pupils, provides them with skills of independent search for patent information, basic knowledge of patent law, it promotes the formation of stable motivation of inventive activity.
