Abstract: The article deals with the urgent problem of the system of Russian education – the strategic development of the educational institution. It is strategic management that requires from a modern leader an integrated approach to problem solving and management decisions and a focus on results and planned actions to achieve diversification in the educational environment. The aim of the article is to acquaint the heads of educational institutions with instruments of strategic management, adapted to the modern education system. The tasks include the following ones: to learn the notion of ―strategy‖ in education; to realize, what a strategy-oriented school is like; to study the main instruments of strategic planning; to work out a model of strategic development of an educational institution; to present the psychological kinds of personal profiles and decisions. The future of management of the school of a ―new‖ day is born in contact with strategic management, because a certain portion of success is vested in strategic management, as it turns strategic management to man, generalizes management of information recourses and brings new content in management activity(functions and processes). Proper strategic planning may take school to new horizons, make it an institution that develops itself and develops its students.
