Abstract: The issue of development of identity presented in the ideas of Erick Erikson is discussed in the studies of modern scholars abroad. The starting point of the exposition is the status concept of James Marcia as the earliest operationalisation of Erikson’s ideas, which appeared to be a basis of researches of trajectories, styles, and strategies of the development of identity. The author expresses criticism on the status model arguing that theoretically defined consequence of identity stages is not true to the fact. An emphasis on social aspects of the development of identity and an inadequate attention to personal motives of a subject are described in this article. M. Berzonsky and A. Waterman are working out additions to the status concept of identity and this article makes sense of them. The author compares data of theoretical and empirical approval of the development of identity concept data coordinating with the stage identity model, its additions, extensions, and alternative versions. In addition, the article defines problems and prospects of an appearance of alternative models of development of identity.
