Abstract: The article deals with development of creative activity of students in the socio-cultural environment of the university. The purpose of the article is to give a theoretical foundation and specification of the notion «creative activity». The article substantiates the urgency of research connected with the necessity to solve a number of traditional contradictions. The article reveals the objectively existing contradiction between society's need of specialists able to solve non-standard professional tasks requiring initiative, creativity, creative thinking, ability to take responsibility upon oneself, and insufficient development in the theory and practice of professional education of sections, aimed at the development of students’ creative activity in the socio-cultural environment of the university. The article analyzes psychological-pedagogical, philosophical, sociological and culturological literature, and positive experience of pedagogical practice. On this basis the author concludes that «creative activity» is the synthesis of complex notions. The notions «creativity», «activity» and «socio-cultural activity» have been theoretically analyzed. The article singles out the components of these notions which form the structure of the object of research and identifies the parameters of formation of creative activity of students in the socio-cultural environment of the university. These theoretical positions make it possible to specify certain aspects of the problem under study and widen our knowledge about it.
