Abstract: This article is concerned with an innovative monitoring system of students’ academic achievements in universities. It examines in detail the types of monitoring and their features. Emphasis is given to the importance of monitoring as it is a necessary component of any teaching process. In turn, evaluation is considered as one of the most important elements of monitoring, and it is a process of giving marks. The authors underline the distinctive features of evaluation in secondary and higher education. The authors believe that the score-rating system is relevant and helps overcome many of the shortcomings of the traditional system of evaluation, which is fairly subjective and does not conform to the leading principles of monitoring, such as validity, reliability, consistency, regularity, and transparency. The analysis of the survey conducted among undergraduates revealed that the students, on the whole, positively assess the use of the score-rating system and believe that the 100-point system is more objective than the 5-point school system. At the same time, the students point out the difficulties they run into with adaptation to the system due to the lack of continuity in how monitoring in the system of " Secondary School-University" is carried out and they give their suggestions how to improve it. Recommendations for the teachers based on the analysis of the questionnaires were developed. The Department of Linguistics and Professional Communication in Foreign Languages of the Ural Federal University, where the evaluation of vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, listening, and speaking is systematic, timely, and transparent is given as an example of effective application of the score -rating system. The authors point up the advantages of the score-rating system for both students and teachers, and they believe that it requires further investigation.
Key words: Innovative system of monitoring, score-rating system, evaluation, difficulties of adaptation, the advantages of application.
