Some Aspects of Teaching Chinese Students Russian

Abstract: The development of economy and rise of income in China stimulates the educational sphere; Russia is not only a neighbouring country today, but a strategic partner for China, which explains the need for native speakers of Russian who might teach Chinese students the Russian language. The teaching staff of the faculties of Russian in China consists of the specialists from the Far East. This paper discusses Chinese educational traditions and customs from the point of view of teaching Russian as a foreign language, among them: respect for the teacher; “chorus principle” of teaching; the rule “save the face” as a national feature; and the problem of phonetic differences between Russian and Chinese. The author also describes the peculiarities of university culture in Chinese universities, which may cause troubles to Russian teachers, connected with political censorship and behaviour of Chinese students. The paper gives recommendations, which are based on the personal experience of the author and the ideas from the Chinese colleagues.
