Russian Orthodox Icon as a Symbol of Faith

Abstract: The paper gives an overview of the history of appearance of the Russian Orthodox icon. Iconpainting is an art of depicting Christian saints. The official version of Orthodox faith in Russia originates from Byzantine Empire. The main functions of the Russian icon are family, household and miraculous. Icons are usually found at homes and in churches. A church is a holy place for Russians, people may talk to God here, such communication usually happens with the help of icons. The architecture of an Orthodox church is described. A church has a forechurch, nave and altar. Icon-stand is one of the parts of church interior. A conclusion is made about strong traditions of icon and interpretation of the pictures of saints in modern Russia. The most worshipped icons in Russia are The Icon of Christ of Edessa and The Icon of the Mother of God.
