Abstract: The paper discusses the problems of teaching Russian to Chinese students, who speak English. The knowledge of English helps them to learn Russian to some extent. The authors believe that is is necessary to compare these languages in the course of learning Russian. The paper analyzes these languages from the point of view of their general vocabulary: the English alphabet is characterized, its sounds and spelling of some words are compared with the Russian alphabet and some Russian words. We hope this research will help Chinese students memorize Russian words with the help of borrowings from English and will rise motivation of the Chinese students to learning Russian. The theory of verbal learning is the key strategy of teaching Russian to the Chinese students. The students understand the new language with the help of another foreign language they know. The authors underline the positive effect of comparative approach to teaching Chinese students the alphabetic language of the Indo-european family.
