Abstract: The article discusses the question of management of the competitive potential of a higher school, which in its turn, provides competitiveness of the national economy of the country. The concept «competitiveness of higher school» is defined; the components and the models of organizational activity of higher school are singled out. On the basis of the Russian and foreign (the USA, Israel and Spain) experience in defining competitiveness of higher school, the authors of the article chose the Shanghai rating (ARWU) as the most clear and objective rating of the universities, which shows their competitiveness. The authors draw attention to the fact that higher school functions in two markets: educational market and labor market. Thus rating is the optimal form assessing the university in figures, but the authors consider the changes in the university to be more important. Strategic management in the conditions of post-industrial economy provides efficient and long-term functioning of higher school and allows the university to occupy strong position in the national educational market.
