Independent Work of Students: Theory and Experience (On the Example of the Course «Imageology»)

Abstract: The author of the article proves dominance of independent work of students as a controversial trend of higher education having positive and negative consequences, but in any case leading to the change of professional roles of lecturers and forms of their communication with the students. The author singles out three main tasks and several functions of a modern teacher connected with them — expert, transmitting, regulating, methodical, communicative, consulting and evaluating, illustrating their content with the help of the author’s experience of teaching students of different specialties of the Institute of Social Education of the USPU the course «Imageology». The author covers some psychological and organizational problems of independent work of students, singles out a number of pedagogical conditions necessary for improving the results of independent out-of-class work and gives definition of this type of cognitive activity of students.
