Abstract: The basic elements determining the development of modern higher education in Russia are the Federal State Educational Standards, which are based on a competence approach, including formation of cultural, general professional and professional competencies. The article presents the author's definition of the concept of "professional competence" and identifies a set of professional competences of teachers of History in the field of "Pedagogical activity". The article is devoted to the methodology of formation of professional competence of students in extracurricular work, including a set of stages, methods, means and methods of activities aimed at formation and development of competencies of future teachers of History. The developed classification of criteria (motivational, cognitive, effective and operational, reflexive) and indicators allowed us to determine the levels of formation of professional competencies defined as critical, reproductive, productive and creative. Approbation of the proposed method was carried out in extracurricular work with students of Historical Faculty of the Ural State Pedagogical University. The author also gives the description of professional competencies of History Teachers on the basis of regulatory documents reflecting the requirements for the key activities and functions of the teacher, as well as the demands from the employers.
