Abstract: The article discusses supplementary education and the role of supplementary education institutions in building appropriate and effective educational environment, which is based on the specifics of the current social reality and the importance of supplementary education for children and other participants of the educational process. Supplementary education system is described as an open environment, which includes governmental and non-governmental organizations of social education, public associations and organizations for children and adults. The main advantage of such institutions is based on the integration of basic Russian educational traditions and innovations. The prospects of development of supplementary education and enhancing its role as a distinct field of education for children and adults are discussed. The importance of supplementary education in building the character and personality of a child is emphasized. A common feature that unites all institutions of supplementary education is their focus on social education as a process of positive interaction between children and adults in joint work, which leads to personal growth and increased individual contribution to the improvement of the social environment. The experience of institutions of supplementary education proves that the attitude of each student is the main result of social education. This positive experience can be used to improve conditions for the development of adolescent personality. The article assesses the role of supplementary educational institutions in formation of readiness of a person to life in the 21st century, and the role of supplementary education in the educational system, in the development and functioning of humanistic, democratic, social and educational environment in modern Russian society.
