Abstract: Nowadays the problem of professional activity of higher school teachers is relevant, which is connected with the growing number of requirements to teachers of the higher school. Professional activity is the cornerstone of the ability of a person to be the subject of work and is a predictor of professional and personal development. The problem of asymmetry of professional activity of teachers of higher school and the opportunities for professional development is very urgent, because the readiness of the person for professional development is a necessary condition of expansion of professional experience, growth of professional competence and professional self-actualization. At the same time the obvious discrepancy is observed today: professional environment at universities gives the employees good opportunities for professional development, but most of the teachers reject these possibilities, or use them partially. On the basis of the analysis of theoretical literature, the article gives a definition of the concept "professional activity" and describes the model of professional activity with the emphasis on features of professional activity of higher school teachers. The article emphasizes the problem of asymmetry of professional activity of the person and the opportunities for professional development given by the professional environment; it outlines a range of predictors of asymmetry of professional activity and opportunities for professional development. The emphasis is placed on the description of those problem zones in the structure of professional activity which can be the reason of asymmetry between professional activity of the person and the opportunities for professional growth.
