Abstract: The teaching process at higher school aims at formation of both general cultural and professional competences, as it is required by the Federal State Educational Standard of Higher Education. Noteworthy is that general cultural competences are the same for different academic programs, while professional competences depend not only on the educational standard, but also on the current state of the sphere of professional activity. So, employers become active participants of the learning process – they can not only be teachers, but they can also influence the content of the academic program. Teaching process is constantly adapted to the labour market demands, so that the graduates might be ready for their professional activity and there was no need in further training before employment. This article focuses on the teaching process in the specialty 43.03.03 “Hotel Business” from the point of view of professional competences development. The current state of the tourism industry determines the requirements to the graduates and the peculiarities of the teaching process. The article discusses the current state of the tourism industry in Sverdlovsk Region and singles out its trends in the context of the academic programs and important events for the region, for example, World Cup 2018. The most necessary competences are determined in the article of the basis of the analysis of the current state of the tourism industry.
