Abstract: A monograph by V.D. Tabanakova “Authorial term: I know, I interpret, I translate” (Tyumen: TyumGU, 2013. 203 p.) is reviewed. The monograph is devoted to original modelling of scientific translation for educational purposes of an authorial term through lingual-terminological, semiotic and hermeneutic approaches. A model ‘I know, I interpret, I translate’ is proposed. This model is based on viewing translation as a complex (interdisciplinary) mental process of comprehension occurring at three levels: image thinking, categorization and conceptualization. To explain this model, a new broad interpretation of an authorial term on the base of cognitive-discursive function of the term in scientific, educational and lexicographic/terminographic discourses is introduced. Prerequisite knowledge for this is understanding of the concept ‘term’ in the past, present and future. A term is analyzed in its three forms: term-word, term-sign and term-system from the perspective of a translator. A necessary level of knowledge (conceptual and methodological base) and skills (methods and techniques including innovative ones) are found to answer the question: how to make translation adequate for educational purposes at all stages of understanding of an authorial term: comprehension, interpretation and, finally, translation as a search for a linguistic form of a special notion in another language. It is noteworthy that (1) the monograph is didactically useful: actions of a translator are modelled; (2) it is in the form of a dialogue of the author with the readers. The reported above proves that the book will easily find its readers – experts in science and education.
