Abstract: The question of transformation of modern Russian education and its transition to activity-oriented model is discussed. The theoretical analysis focuses on the problem of predicting the future as one of the conditions of effectiveness in today's society. The notion “prognostic ability” of ф person is defined. There is an overview of the studies on the problem of prognostic abilities from the point of view of the modern methodological approaches. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the role of self-conscious behavior of a person in forecasting process. In the course of empirical research, we describe the dynamics of the prognostic abilities and self-activity of students in the learning process at the university. The existence of a link between prognostic abilities and self-regulation of behavior of students is proved. The paper establishes direct correlation between the individual components of the ability to predict and instruments of self-regulation of behavior of students. The research enriches the existing views on the phenomenon of prognostic abilities of an individual, factors and mechanisms of their development. It justifies the need for targeted development of prognostic abilities and self-regulation of behavior of students as a condition for improving their professional and personal competence.
