Psychological and Pedagogical Support in Summer Camps

Abstract: The paper describes psychological and pedagogical support as one of the main activities of a summer camp for children. Psychological and pedagogical support in summer camp is interaction (sociocultural and personal) between a child and a teacher (psychologist), which is based on encouragement and care to satisfy physiological and social needs of a child. The paper describes the content of psychological and pedagogical support of children and teenagers from the point of view physiological and social needs satisfaction in summer camps. The theory of A. Maslow makes the basis for this description. Psychological and pedagogical support in summer camp aims at providing social and psychological conditions, which, on the one hand, help satisfy basic needs of children and teenagers (adaptation form the very beginning of session, social and psychological security), on the other hand, they satisfy social needs of children, help to solve some personal problems caused by unusual surrounding, including emotional-volitional behavior, self-discipline, independence, the ability to fit in the new system and to follow the rule of behavior in group of peers, the need for long-term communication with them. The content of support should be based on the norms of coresidence, rules and traditions of the camp to establish good relations with peers and teachers and to make good social and psychological atmosphere in the group. It should also satisfy the needs for self-realization, creative potential development, personal ideas implementation and give the opportunity for self-expression.
