Abstract: The article is devoted to the questions of intellectual competence formation in future biotechnologists. The author identifies and characterizes the components of intellectual competence: motivational, cognitive, metacognitive, self-educational, research, communicative and personal. The paper discusses the concept of "model" and "modeling" and clarifies the boundaries of the modeling method in teaching science. Relying on the logic adopted in the construction of structural-functional models in pedagogical sciences, the formation of the intellectual competence in future biotechnologists at the university is presented as a holistic system in which its constituent parts are allocated (components, elements, subsystems). Theoretical model of intellectual competence formation of future biotechnologists, which is presented in the given study, consists of interrelated structural-functional elements that reveal rationally informed idea about the purpose of education; about the components in the structure of intellectual competence; methodological bases of formation of the intellectual competence; content and stages of formation and development of intellectual competence. The model of intellectual competence formation consists of the following interrelated structural and functional components: motivational-targeted, organizational-technological and productive.
