Abstract: The article is devoted to the advantages of teaching a short story in a foreign language class. A number of ways of interpreting critical thinking by various foreign researchers from the epoch of Socrates to the present time are considered. In addition, the paper reveals the effectiveness of critical thinking (CT) strategies in teaching English literature in general, and short stories in particular. Students learn the skills of effective interaction, active listening, and the ability to feedback in the process of communicative activity. In this context, the expression of a critical creative thought based on the information read or listened to is an integral component of the communicative activity of learners. The authors of the article pay much attention to the use of interactive methods and technologies that contribute to the most productive inclusion of learners in communication activities by creating a favorable atmosphere for the full realization of their intellectual abilities, as well as the development of their critical thinking skills. Moreover, this form of communication modeling in a foreign language plays an invaluable role in the process of activating the creative cognitive initiative of learners in the field of their future professional activity, promotes the development of their intercultural competence, as well as forms a positive attitude and motivation for the further study and development of various aspects of a foreign language. According to the results of the study, the authors propose a certain set of critical thinking strategies for their more active and effective use in teaching foreign languages in institutions of higher education.
