Business Simulation “Virtual Hotel” as a Method of Facilitating Professional Language Acquisition in Hospitality Higher Education Curriculum

Abstract: The relevance of the chosen topic is due to the need to introduce innovative pedagogical technologies in the process of teaching a foreign language to future specialists in the hospitality industry. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the computer business simulation “Virtual Hotel” in teaching the discipline “Foreign language in the field of professional communication”. The method of this study, along with the general scientific, is the modeling of the educational process, focused on the development of linguistic, socio-cultural and professional competences in the course of teaching a foreign language to future specialists in the hospitality industry. We have developed a modular structure of foreign language for professional purposes teaching based on the business simulation “Virtel”, including 7 common and 13 additional modules for reception, housekeeping and catering facilities. The main modules are the conversation on general topics and forms of greeting; answers to questions in a polite manner; provision, review and clarification of information; general ethics of politeness and business etiquette; conflict resolution; general financial literacy. Moreover, in simulated professional contexts, it is necessary to teach students to professionally labeled strategies for confident and effective communication that are necessary for reception, housekeeping and catering personnel. This article demonstrates how computer business simulation can serve as a tool for making and shaping effective decisions at both the operational and managerial levels by means of a foreign language. Important conclusion of this study is that the business simulation “Virtel” allows students to apply functional knowledge in the course of foreign language for professional purposes training.
