Abstract: Modern methods of teaching a foreign language comply with the requirements of tertiary education. Ural Federal University prioritizes project-based learning, with a focus on interdisciplinary projects, including ones accomplished in a foreign language. On the one hand, in such a project activity a foreign language serves as a tool for gaining new knowledge in the professional field; on the other hand, it provides a means of demonstrating the results of research. Scientific texts typically have a certain structure, speech patterns and grammar phrases students are normally not familiar with. In order to enhance the efficiency of students’ work with scientific texts the authors of the article propose a clear scheme of actions, which is based on the competence, personal activity, communicative, problem, contextual and systemic approaches. The authors analyze the general methodological principles of teaching reading in a foreign language (functionality, structure, accounting for the native language in mastering a foreign language, programming speech activity) and specific methodological principles of teaching reading scientific texts while implementing interdisciplinary projects in a foreign language (teaching based on speech samples, interaction of the main types of speech activity and approximation of educational activities). The authors emphasize the need to analyze scientific texts for reliability, and describe a step-by-step algorithm for evaluating the sources of scientific articles. This research provides the description of the main stages of interdisciplinary project in a foreign language implementation fulfilled by students of Institute of Radiolectronics and Information Technologies of Ural Federal University. The method of working with scientific texts is grounded in the provisions of tentative-reference, search-reference and generalizing-reference reading. The proposed method is consistent with the objectives of the interdisciplinary project and the stages of its implementation. The practice of teaching methods of reading scientific texts demonstrates effective learning outcomes.
