Abstract: Review of the teaching textbook “Teaching foreign language listening: an auditive workshop in the French language”, authors E. M. Kolesova and N. N. Sergeeva, published in the Ural State Pedagogical University in 2019. A critical analysis of the methodological justification and of the set of tasks aimed at the development of listening skills in French as a foreign language for humanitarian specialties students is proposed. The article presents an analysis of objective and subjective difficulties in teaching listening in a foreign language, including the specific difficulties of listening in French. The compliance of the reviewed textbook with the requirements of Russian educational standards and international requirements to the levels of French as a foreign language is noted, which facilitates the academic mobility of students in the framework of the Bologna Declaration. The advantages of the reviewed textbook: the use of modern authentic language material from the French radio programs (news, interviews, reports, information programs), the original set of exercises for the development of different types of listening and of speaking and writing skills, the sequential mechanism of the required skills and abilities formation. Selected audio texts contain large amounts of linguistic information, involve significant independent work with reference literature, provide many opportunities to discuss and formulate opinions in oral (monologue and dialogue speech) and in writing (essay writing, business letter). The reviewed textbook can be successfully used in the classroom with students of philological and humanitarian specialties, studying French as the first and second foreign language.
