Abstract: The relevance of the research is caused by the existence of the problem of difficulties encountered by non-linguistic students when working with the vocabulary of English civil protection discourse and a limited number of studies on the search for means and ways to teach students to independently overcome the difficulties encountered. The results of literature review on modern trends in teaching foreign language vocabulary, the study of experience of domestic and foreign researchers regarding the development of learning strategies, conducting exploratory research allowed to design and implement methodical support for teaching the vocabulary of professional discourse to students. In this study, strategies for working with vocabulary are understood as general speech actions aimed at overcoming the difficulties of working with the vocabulary. In context of this research tactics are interpreted as particular speech actions aimed at overcoming the difficulties of working with the vocabulary. Strategies for working with vocabulary are considered as optimal means of overcoming lexical difficulties and developing appropriate foreign language lexical skills and knowledge as well as foreign language lexical competence in general. These were the strategies of initial processing of lexical material, development of individual lexical field, identification, understanding and semantic analysis, practical usage of lexical units, control and correction of utterance. The strategies that are implemented through tactics are included in a special set of exercises that combines groups of preparatory, speech, control and additional exercises. The exercises for classroom work are the leading ones, while self-study exercises are supplementary and they are offered in a more simplified form. English civil protection discourse served as material for developing the set of exercises mentioned. All text, audio and video materials of professional discourse were previously methodically processed. The authors see the practical expediency of the proposed set of exercises owing to the positive results of its testing at a non-linguistic university.
