Sociocultural Adaptation among International Students in Tomsk Universities

Abstract: Sociocultural adaptation is a complex and multi-faceted phenomenon. Its basic characteristic feature is an adequate reaction to a new cultural and social environment as well as conceptual changes of life style and standards of living. The article presents a research devoted to the study of the basic theories, methodology and specific nature of the foreign students’ sociocultural adaptation to the new educational environment in Tomsk universities. Thus, the aim of the research is to identify the problems, the foreign students have during the sociocultural adaptation period. The main factors, influencing on the whole process of the sociocultural adaptation itself, are also discussed. The notion of sociocultural adaptation, some possible accultural strategies and variants of the adaptation curve are described. Some theoretical methods of investigation were used (literature studying, analysis and data processing, modeling). The scientific novelty of the presented research deals with the problems and factors influencing on the sociocultural adaptation process. They allow forming some practical recommendations important for supervision and guidance of the foreign students’ sociocultural adaptation process. The gained results show that the described conditions of the sociocultural adaptation process, as well as the factors influenced on its progress and dynamics, may be applied and reconstructed at any educational institution in order to achieve a high sociocultural adaptation level of the foreign students. Nowadays the growth of the amount of the foreign students in the higher educational institution is forced not only by the modern educational environment. It is marked as one of the most important factors in considering a prestigious image of the university.
