Olympiad in the Russian Language as a Means of Increasing Motivation of Pupils to Learn Linguistic Discipline

Abstract: The article summarizes the experience of the authors involved in the selection and creation of olympiad tasks in the Russian language for schoolchildren, which makes it possible to conclude that participation in the olympiad stimulates scientific thinking, demonstrates linguistic erudition, and develops pupils’ creativity. It is a productive form of motivating schoolchildren to study a particular subject, in this case the Russian language. The selection of linguistic tasks allows not only to check the pupils' readiness to do standard tasks based on the system knowledge on the subject outlined by the school curriculum, but also to determine the learner’s intellectual and creative potential. Special attention is paid to such parameters as the ability for independent non-standard thinking, linguistic “guess” and its scientific substantiation within the framework of the problems proposed by the tasks. The article focuses on the fact that participation of schoolchildren in competitions of various ranks positively affects their knowledge in the subject. In addition, it allows finding a rational approach to the selection of potential university applicants in a particular specialty, to give pupils career guidance advice, etc. The article discusses the use of specific olympiad linguistic tasks to check the level of potential university applicants.
